Join a world-class police department serving one of the country's most dynamic cities. San Francisco Police Officers promote safety with respect across diverse neighborhoods and settings—from foot patrols and squad cars to planned events and community programs.

Responsibilities
  • Patrol assigned districts; respond to calls for service; provide emergency first aid.
  • Conduct preliminary investigations; interview victims, witnesses, and suspects; prepare reports.
  • Promote community policing; attend community meetings and programs.
  • Enforce traffic and parking laws; direct traffic at collisions, demonstrations, and events.
  • Make arrests/detain suspects; pursue and coordinate perimeters when needed.
  • Prepare for and attend court; testify as required.
  • Participate in ongoing training and professional development
Requirements
  • Education: U.S. high school diploma, GED, California HS Proficiency Exam, or AA+ degree from a U.S.-accredited college/university.
  • Age: At least 20 at exam time and 21 by appointment.
  • Driver's license: Valid driver license at application and throughout selection; California license required by hire date.
  • Judicial record: No felony; no domestic-violence conviction; no misdemeanor prohibiting firearm ownership; not restricted from City employment.
  • Desired: U.S. military experience; proficiency in a second language relevant to SF communities.
Pay & Benefits
  • 10 paid vacation days/year (first 5 years); 15 days/year (next 10 years); 20 days/year after 15 years.
  • 4 floating holidays; 13 paid sick days/year; multiple healthcare plans.
  • Bilingual pay & special assignment pay.
  • Retirement: 3% of final compensation per year of service at age 58 (max 90% based on years of service). Employee contributions to retirement and retiree healthcare apply per City Charter.
