Phlebotomists at Mayo Clinic are responsible for collecting blood samples from patients of all ages, using various established methods to ensure both quality and patient safety. This role includes quick response to emergencies, detailed record keeping, and high-quality interactions with patients and health care team members.

Key Responsibilities

• Obtain blood samples using appropriate phlebotomy techniques
• Ensure accurate patient identification and labelling
• Rapidly respond to medical emergencies
• Handle, transport, and process specimens safely
• Maintain high standards of infection control and safety
• Utilize various computer systems for order entry and specimen tracking
• Assist in training new staff and students

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required
• Formal phlebotomy experience or medical background preferred
• Certification preferred but not required
• Strong interpersonal, organizational, and customer service skills
